Principal Pen
Welcome back to school. We are already halfway through Week 2 of Term 2.
For those who haven’t met me yet, my name is Lee Braney and I will be principal of Aitkenvale State school for Term 2 and Term 3. For the past 11 years I have held a position of leadership in the North Queensland Region, 3 years as a teaching principal at Clare State School in the Burdekin, 8 years as Deputy Principal at Bohlevale State School and have recently completed a month as Acting Principal of Vincent SS. As a leader in each of these settings I have been provided with many opportunities and gained a lot of experience.
I am passionate about challenging young people to be the best they can be and this is also demonstrated through my roles as Rugby League Coach at Centrals and Cricket coach at Wanderers.
I look forward to continuing the great work already being done at Aitkenvale and look forward to meeting you all and getting to know the Aitkenvale community. Please say hello when you see me at the gates or walking around the school. Thank you to those people who have already made me feel welcome.
Earlier in the year the school shared the Annual Implementation Plan with the community. The primary focus areas this year include maximizing student engagement and wellbeing through a reduction in behaviour incidents and improvements in the core subject of English. Your support and involvement in these initiatives are crucial to the success of our students, and I look forward to working collaboratively to achieve these goals.
I also look forward to seeing more parents actively engage with the school as the year progresses. Your involvement and partnership in your child's education are invaluable. It is through this collaboration that we can ensure the best outcomes for our students. I encourage all parents to continue partnering with the school to ensure that our students take pride in their uniform and adhere to the school's uniform policy. A neat and uniform appearance not only reflects our commitment to discipline but also fosters a sense of unity within the school community.
I am excited to be a part of the centenary celebrations and hope all of you will be able to attend. There are a lot of activities organised for Friday 31st May and Saturday 1st June. It promises to be a memorable occasion, and your involvement will add to the joy and spirit of this milestone event. Further information to be distributed in the coming weeks.
Throughout last term and over the holidays you may have noticed ongoing improvements to our school's facilities. We currently have a comprehensive upgrade of the senior amenities, a re-fit of the school’s administration block and the establishment of a staff learning lounge dedicated to professional development being completed. Over the holidays the CPA floor was painted blue with handball areas and a game stencilled on it. The CPA looks amazing. These enhancements are aimed at providing our students and staff with an even more conductive learning and working environment.
ANZAC DAY
On Thursday, 25 April 2024, ANZAC Day is commemorated in Australia and New Zealand. ANZAC Day is a commemoration of the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April in 1915. It is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. This morning, Aitkenvale State School commemorated ANZAC Day at a whole school Assembly in the Hall. Thank you to the families, friends and community who attended. Special thanks to our guests Sergeant Joseph Kirkland and Craftsman Foster.
Recognising the importance of Townsville’s role as a garrison city, it is particularly important for us to foster the memory of our ANZAC soldiers and our past and present servicepeople.
Towards the end of our ceremony, the Last Post will be played. This historical music was played in army camps to announce the end of the day, a time when soldiers should be resting. Today, the Last Post is played for those who have done their duty, and are now at rest.
On Thursday 25 April, representatives of our school community will march from the Weir State School. Staff and students will recognise, thank and show support for our past and current servicepeople.

Meet our Staff
Year 5A
5A has begun learning about the solar system in preparation for creating a poster describing the key features of our solar system and describing impactful scientific developments and contributions. Students have demonstrated impressive background knowledge on space and our solar system.
Year 5B
Year 5 began their English learning this year reading and learning from the work of Paul Jennings, a terrific, timeless Australian author. His book “The Gizmo” was central throughout the term. Students enjoyed reading, writing – and even building their own gizmos!
ANZAC Ceremony
Yesterday Aitkenvale State School paid our respects in remembering the ANZAC's with a whole school parade. Each class made their own wreaths to lay at the ceremony. A special thank you to Sergeant Kirkland and Craftsman Foster who attended the service.
ANZAC March
Staff and students marched at the ANZAC day parade at Thuringowa this morning to honour and remember the men and women that have served our nation.
CPA Upgrade
It was a super busy holiday break at school with many contractors on site to refresh our tired facilities. The CPA has had a complete overhaul with synpave coating over the concrete. Wow!!
