Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the final two weeks of Term 1, I want to express my gratitude for your ongoing support and collaboration in fostering a conducive learning environment for our students. Together, we have been able to uphold high expectations in both behaviour and academic performance, ensuring the success of our school community.
Here are a few important updates and reminders for the coming weeks:
P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM): I encourage all parents to attend the P&C AGM on Wednesday, March 20th, starting at 3:00 PM. This meeting presents an excellent opportunity to engage with the school community, contribute ideas, and understand the benefits of being part of our Parents and Citizens Association. Our P&C had to be put in “caretaker” mode last year due only 1 parent volunteering to take up a position. We would like to rectify this so that the P&C can resume normal activities including fundraising to support students and the school. If you would like more information, please contact the school and we will connect you with the P&C President, Lizzie Carrol.
Parent/Teacher Interviews: Thank you to everyone who attended this week’s interviews. It was pleasing to see so many conversations about student learning and student progress taking place. If you were unable to meet with your son/daughter’s teacher and would like this opportunity please contact the school and arrangements will be made.
Interschool Swimming Carnival: Our school swim team has achieved remarkable results at the recent interschool swimming carnival. Their achievements will be celebrated on Friday’s parade but I was most proud of their dedication to representing our school with pride, doing their best and displaying great behaviour and sportsmanship.
Welcome Back: We extend a warm welcome back to two valued members of our staff, Mrs. Peachey and Mrs. Thomas, who are returning from leave. They will be taking on literacy support roles, focusing particularly on assisting our refugee students. Their expertise and dedication will undoubtedly enrich the learning experience for all students involved.
Every Day Counts: Regular school attendance is crucial for academic success. I'm pleased to report that our whole school attendance rate currently stands at 85%, marking a significant improvement of 4% from this time last year. Consistent attendance not only enhances academic performance but also fosters a sense of belonging and routine among students. Ms Leedie’s weekly “spin to win” attendance game is not only great fun but a fantastic way to reward those classes who have strong attendance.
Thank you once again for your continued support and commitment to our school's mission of “achieving excellence together”. Together, we will continue to nurture an environment where “every student succeeds and belongs”. In the blur of the next 2 weeks let’s keep supporting each other to maintain calm classrooms where learning can flourish.
Kind regards,
Thomas Frankling

Meet the Staff
Year 2A
2A have been working on Transformations of shapes. We have learnt about slide, flip and turns. The students have worked in groups and individually to identify the transformation and write a set of instructions for a shape. They have done so well and have enjoyed this unit.
Year 2B
2B have had been working hard this term! In Maths, we looked at data that we had to collect, organise and represent. Our new spelling programme is helping us in our English unit about comparing different characters. For HASS we are learning about exploring different locations around the world (we love the continents song), the significance of different place and how people are connected to them. For Health, we have been learning about healthy food choices and how to stay fit and active.
Interschool Swimming Carnival
Last Friday students represented Aitkenvale State School in the interschool swimming carnival at Kokoda Pool. Congratulations to those students who participated, you did a fantastic job.

Does Attendance Really Matter?
'Away for the day' – mobile phones and wearable devices at school
From the beginning of Term 1 2024, all Queensland state school students must keep their mobile phones switched off and 'away for the day' during school hours. Notifications on wearable devices, such as smartwatches, must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.
Aitkenvale State School is committed to reducing the distraction of mobile phones and other device to provide an optimal learning environment. All electronic devices including smart phones, smart watches, ipods and tablets are to be signed in at the office on arrival to school. These items are kept locked in the office throughout the day. Students are required to collect their phones from 2:30pm. Students are not to be using devices whilst on the school grounds.
School Watch
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools. If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene.
Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88.
If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).
