Dear Parents,
I hope this message finds you well and that your family has had a smooth and successful start to the new year. As we settle into the rhythm of the academic calendar, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support and collaboration. Together, we've embarked on a journey towards excellence, guided by our shared vision, motto, values, and expectations.
Our school's vision is not just a statement but a guiding beacon for all our endeavours. We aspire to create a welcoming, inclusive, and connected learning community where everyone not only succeeds but also feels a sense of belonging. It is this sense of belonging that fosters an environment where each individual can thrive and reach their full potential.
Embedded within our vision is our motto: "Achieving excellence together." This underscores the importance of collective effort and collaboration in reaching our goals. By working hand in hand, students, parents, and staff alike contribute to the collective success of our school community.
Furthermore, our values—Aspirational, Inclusive, Resilient—serve as pillars upon which our community stands. These values shape our interactions, guide our decisions, and define our culture. They remind us to aim high, embrace diversity, and demonstrate strength in the face of challenges.
In line with our values, we hold high expectations for ourselves and each other. We strive to create a safe, respectful, and responsible environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to excel. It is through upholding these expectations that we cultivate a culture of mutual respect and accountability.
As we look ahead, we are excited to celebrate a significant milestone in our school's history—the centenary celebrations in June. While we eagerly anticipate this momentous occasion, we also have another special event on the horizon—the unveiling of the time capsule buried during our 75th jubilee. I assure you, Mr. Bail, our dedicated groundsman, is diligently working to locate it, and we will keep you updated on the progress.
Additionally, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the parents who joined us for the pancake welcome breakfast last week. Your presence and participation are truly appreciated, and I hope to see many more of you at our upcoming events. Together, let's continue to live and breathe our vision, motto, values, and expectations each day, ensuring that our school remains a beacon of excellence and inclusivity for the next 100 years and beyond.
Finally, I invite you to join us for the next 100 years committee meeting on Tuesday, 20th, at 3 pm, where we will discuss further plans for our centenary celebrations and other initiatives. Thank you once again for your unwavering support and commitment to our school community.
Warm regards,
Thomas Frankling

Meet Our Staff - Prep
Prep
This term in Prep, we have been learning about to many different things! In English, we are learning to retell stories. We have been reading about Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Three Little Pigs. We love to retell our stories using our puppets and masks. In maths we have been practicing our counting and making groups to match numbers. In Science, we have been learning about what living things need to stay alive.
Mrs Murphy
Prep A
Prep B have been recognising the importance of play to assist children in their learning of the curriculum. The children have enjoyed hands on creative experiences for English, creating the setting for our stories, using puppets and making their very own character masks. This not only promotes learning in regard to the curriculum but also assists children with their social abilities and furthering their relationships with peers.
For Science we have enjoyed observing living things such as plants and watching the roots grow. The children have also enjoyed watching our caterpillar create a cocoon, now we will patiently wait for the amazing change that is going to occur.

Is it living?
On Friday 2nd Brett Murphy visited our Year 3 students. During his visit, he taught the students how scientists identify characteristics of all living things. They then grouped living things based on their observable features.During this activity students were introduced to Murtle the turtle and Chloe the Clownfish.
GRIP Leadership Conference
Last Wednesday our school leaders were invited to attend the GRIP leadership conference at the Mecure Inn. It was an interactive, practical conference, full of engaging activities whereby all students could participate. We had a great day and gathered some excellent ideas to be able to move forward in our fundraising adventures this year!
6B
The students in 6B have been busy designing theme parks for the Townsville area as part of the Design Technology curriculum.

Touch Football
On Tuesday of this week, Aitkenvale State School welcomed some of the finest talents in Touch Football, with Indigenous and Maori All-Star players imparting their knowledge through a touch football clinic with our Year 5 and 6 students. Aitkenvale State School would like to extend our gratitude to Touch Football Australia for organising this great opportunity for our students, and to the Indigenous and Maori All-Star players for their willingness to share their time and expertise with our students. It was a chance for our students to learn from some of the best in the game. Sport allows us to come together; to learn, grow, and celebrate the beautiful tapestry of cultures that make our community truly special.

Naplan
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
There are four assessments (Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy) undertaken nationwide, every year, 13–25 March.
As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.
This year we are completing NAPLAN online. NAPLAN Online provides a better assessment, more precise results and is more engaging for students. The assessments can run through a real-time internet connection or onscreen without an internet connection. Watch the short clip: Understanding NAPLAN Online (2 min 11s).
NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results. Watch the Tailored testing video (3 min 6s).
Watch the video NAPLAN accessibility (6 min 23s), where students, parents/carers and teachers talk about the benefits of NAPLAN Online.
To see the types of questions and functionalities in the online tests, visit the public demonstration site page.
Read the NAPLAN information brochure for parents and carers (PDF 133 kb), also available in Simple English (PDF 1 mb).
This brochure is also available in the following languages:

What and When?
The NAPLAN online test window is nine days. This allows schools some flexibility in scheduling.
Students who are absent when their class participates in the tests can sit catch-up tests later in the test window.
Preparing for NAPLAN
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Excessive preparation is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.
NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.
NAPLAN results
NAPLAN reports will arrive from mid-August to mid-September. We will notify you when the reports are being sent home. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.

'Away for the day' – mobile phones and wearable devices at school
From the beginning of Term 1 2024, all Queensland state school students must keep their mobile phones switched off and 'away for the day' during school hours. Notifications on wearable devices, such as smartwatches, must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.
Aitkenvale State School is committed to reducing the distraction of mobile phones and other device to provide an optimal learning environment. All electronic devices including smart phones, smart watches, ipods and tablets are to be signed in at the office on arrival to school. These items are kept locked in the office throughout the day. Students are required to collect their phones from 2:30pm. Students are not to be using devices whilst on the school grounds.
