Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! After what was a really settled first three days and a very unsettled day on Friday leading into the weather event closing our school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thankfully the Aitkenvale and surrounding community were not inundated, and those in the black zones were able to return home yesterday. However, if you were flood affected, please let us know if you need support. You can also use this link for Disaster Recovery Directory information.
I am excited for what 2025 will bring Aitkenvale State School.
Welcome to all our new families and in particular our new preps. We look forward to seeing you grow and learn throughout your first year of school. It is exciting times, and we wish you all the very best on this wonderful education journey.
Severe Weather Event Procedures
In the case when local rain causes flash flooding, and you wish to collect your child/children, please do so. You know your local area and know whether you will be cut off or not. In the event that schools are going to close within the school day you will be notified by the school, or you can check the closures website.
In the event of school being closed, it is not the principal’s decision to do so. The Department of Education coordinates this decision with the Disaster Management Committee or the Local Disaster Management Committee. Then if the decision for safety is made that all schools are closed, schools will notify parents/carers via SMS and it will go up on the School Closure website, as well as local radio stations will broadcast the message.
Schools cannot re open following a closure until a Rapid Damage Assessment is conducted by QBUILD to ensure the school is safe for staff and students to return.
Thank you for your patience and know that we have to follow protocols from the Department, and I cannot make individual decisions about Aitkenvale SS.
It is great that we are able to be back at school and are ready to learn.
We have had some water damage to a couple of buildings, but we have been extremely lucky.
The forecast predicts more rain, so the students likely won't be heading out to the playgrounds anytime soon.

Overcoming Anxiety About Going to School

Safer Internet Day - 11th February
How will you support Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 11 February? This year’s theme is all about working together to help make the internet a safer, and more positive place. Check out esafety.gov.au to find out how you can create a safer online environment, including advice and support for reporting online abuse. Make sure to also register for any of the free eSafety Commissioner webinars hosted throughout February.

Naplan
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards. NAPLAN will commence on 12 March 2025, in Term 1.

School Crossing Safety Guidelines
Our School Crossing Supervisors have the very important role of ensuring our children cross the road safely to get to and from school, but they aren't the only ones. It's up to motorists to also obey the road rules and make sure school zones are safe for all pedestrians.
Please remember:
Slow down to the advised speed – for most of our school zones, this is 40km/h
Keep an eye out for all pedestrians (some of them are fairly small!) and remember not to stop too close to the crossing
Wait until the crossing is completely free of all pedestrians, including the School Crossing Supervisor, before driving through
Watch for and obey the instructions of the school crossing supervisor
