Principal Pen
Wadda Mooli, Habari, Bonjour.
Welcome to week 10 of Term 3.
STAFFING UPDATE
Mr Thomas Frankling will be continuing on as Principal at Northern Beaches State High School for Term 4.
I am excited to announce that I have been extended as Aitkenvale State School Principal for the remainder of the year. I have learned a lot from your children the staff and community in the time I have been here and look forward to continuing this growth over the coming term.
This term we have farewelled a number of much-loved staff in Mrs Boswood, Mrs Peachey and this week we say farewell to Mrs Hayden. I would like to thank each of these ladies for the amazing work they have done for the Aitkenvale community and students. They will all be missed but we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
YEAR 6 into 7 2025
It is important for parents and carers of Year 6 students to make contact with their high school of choice for next year, if you haven’t already done so. This time of year, is usually when various enrolment information evenings are held, and enrolment interview blocks occur. Any student attendance at Term 4 open days or transition days is always subject to involvement in a current enrolment process at that particular high school and confirmed enrolment at that high school for 2025. If Year 6 students and families have not had an enrolment interview, the high/secondary schools do not allow students to attend their respective open/transition days.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Thank you to all parents and carers who attended the Parent Teacher interviews Wednesday last week. There was a wonderful number of people in attendance across the 3-hour timeslot. It was great to hear the rich conversations being had between teachers and families. This connection ultimately benefits your children and their academic outcomes.
PREP ENROLMENTS
We are now taking all Prep enrolments for 2025. Children born 01 July 2019 – 30 June 2020 are eligible to attend Prep next year. Make sure you get your enrolment forms completed and handed into the office as soon as possible.
SWIMMING
Term 4 Swimming Lessons for P-6 will occur during regular PE lessons. More information will be sent out prior to the commencement of these lessons. At Aitkenvale SS we are lucky to have the pool in our school grounds. This means all students can participate.
STUDENTS and SOCIAL MEDIA
With the school holidays upon us it would be reasonable to assume that a number of our students will be spending more time online and on social media than normal. With that in mind, and if not already being done, the next two weeks is a great opportunity for parents and carers to take the time to critically view what their child/ren are doing on social media. Please take the time to talk with your child and view and monitor their interactions on social media, online gaming and communication apps.
Take the time to see that your child is participating in a respectful way towards others in the group, for example:
- How is your son referring to female students, in particular, when communicating in a chat group?
- How is your daughter referring to other students when she is part of a chat group or conversation with others about a current issue or in general conversation?
- Is the language your child using appropriate, and would it be appropriate for your child to speak that way if she/he was speaking aloud?
- Is your child gossiping?
- Are there photos/images involved?
The main thing is to remain vigilant as a parent and carer to ensure that your child is safe online, but also that your child is contributing to the safety and well-being of other student users of social media by using social media and online applications appropriately at all times.
ATTENDANCE
Our Goal for 2024 was set at 85% attendance for the whole school as of week 10 Term 3 we currently sit at 86%. This is an increase of nearly 5% for the year. Let’s see if we can increase the % even further throughout Term 4.
School attendance is compulsory under the Education Act, however if children are unwell, we know it is best for them and the school community for them to stay home. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, parents are requested to inform the school. If your child is absent from school on any given day and we are unaware of the reason for the absence, an SMS message will be generated asking you to contact the school regarding your child’s absence. Students are encouraged to be At School, On Time, Every Day, unless they are unwell.
LATE ARRIVALS
Students arriving after 8:45am must report to the office to receive a late slip. Prior to 8.45am students are asked to go directly to their class to begin learning.
Our school has two focus areas for 2024, which drive the work happening at Aitkenvale SS. The following are our priorities as outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan 2024.
School Priority 1
Maximise student engagement and wellbeing across all settings through a reduction in reported behaviour incidences
School Priority 2
Improve Level of Achievement in English for all students (Prep - Year 6) through a focus on lesson planning and delivery
I hope you all have a great holiday period and enjoy the time away from packing lunches, ironing uniforms and getting the children ready for school. Thank you for working with the school as partners in your child’s learning. I look forward to hearing all your great adventures when we return after the holidays.

Year 4's Recycling Adventure: Behind the Scenes at the Materials Recovery Facility ♻
On Tuesday, students in Year 4 were invited to participate in a tour of the Townsville City Council’s Materials Recovery Facility as part of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) unit of work. In HASS, students have been learning about sustainable waste management practices. Students had the opportunity to learn more about what happened to the contents of our recycling bins after they have been collected by trucks and gain a deeper understanding about the importance of recycling correctly.

Thank you for your support! 👻🕸️🕺
R U OK?
R U Ok? It’s not always easy to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK, but it could change a life. While children can't be expected to fix someone’s problems, they can be encouraged to listen to what their friend is saying, show they care and tell a teacher, school counsellor or trusted adult if they are worried about their friend. R U OK? has created a music video to encourage children from Kindergarten to Year 6 to take the time to comfort their friends when they're feeling blue. Watch and share to show the young people in your world that it’s lighter when we share the load!

Keep Our school Safe: School Watch 👀
Empty schools can become targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage, especially during school holiday periods. This comes at a cost to the whole community and not just the financial cost of repairs.
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools. If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene.
Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88.
If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).
No Excuse for Abuse
Schools are workplaces and, just like any workplace, abuse or aggression of any kind is unacceptable. While most interactions are positive, there's no excuse for aggressive or harassing behaviour either in person or online.
Our campaign addresses this issue by shedding light on these behaviours and making it clear that mistreatment of school staff is never acceptable, it can be a crime and may lead to prosecution. This initiative builds on previous activities to raise awareness and reinforce the message that respect is essential in every interaction within the school community.
