Principal Pen
Wadda Mooli, Habari, Bonjour.
Welcome to week 4 of Term 3. We have settled into a new term and all classes are busy learning. I would like to congratulate the majority of students for working hard and doing the right thing in class.
ACADEMIC AWARDS CEREMONY
Last Friday we celebrated academic success in our school. Students were awarded awards for:
Top of class - presented to the student with the highest academic achievement averaged across all key learning areas.
Class spirit – presented to the student with the best display of citizenship, volunteerism and sportsmanship.
Most improved – presented to the student with the most improved academic performance.
Most diligent – presented to the student with the most consistently hard-working, industrious approach to learning.
Students who attended 100% in semester 1 were also presented with a certificate and badge. This is a great achievement. There were 150 students who received certificates in class for attending 95-99%. Congratulations to all the students who received awards. It was great to see all your smiling faces. I would like to thank all the parents and community members who came along to celebrate with us.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Congratulations to all students who participated in the athletics carnival. We have some amazing athletes in our school who can run fast, hurdle high things, jump into sand and throw heavy things. The day was very successful with exemplary behaviour all day. Thank you to all the staff who assisted on the day with the setup, pack down and officiating. It was great to see so many parents in attendance.
NAIDOC
NAIDOC day was an amazing day of culture. Thank you to the choir, dancers and all of our special guests. You made our day something to remember. For me the highlight was the smell and taste of the Kup Murri. It is amazing that a fire in the ground can create such wonderful food. I also enjoyed seeing all of the students engaging in activities respectfully all day. Well done to all involved.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
Each year, families are asked to participate in the School Opinion Survey. Families with one or more enrolled student will receive one invitation to complete the survey. OneSchool (the departmental database) generates invitations. Invitations are sent over a number of days in the week beginning Monday 15 July. The survey closes on 16 August. We appreciate your feedback and encourage as many families as possible to participate. More information will be provided in coming weeks. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to provide us with this invaluable feedback.
LATE ARRIVALS
Students arriving after 8:45am must report to the office to receive a late slip. Prior to 8.45am students are asked to go directly to their class to begin learning.
ATTENDANCE
School attendance is compulsory under the Education Act, however if children are unwell, we know it is best for them and the school community for them to stay home. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, parents are requested to inform the school. If your child is absent from school on any given day and we are unaware of the reason for the absence, an SMS message will be generated asking you to contact the school regarding your child’s absence. Students are encouraged to be At School, On Time, Every Day, unless they are unwell.
Our school has two focus areas for 2024, which drive the work happening at Aitkenvale SS. The following are our priorities as outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan 2024.
School Priority 1
Maximise student engagement and wellbeing across all settings through a reduction in reported behaviour incidences
School Priority 2
Improve Level of Achievement in English for all students (Prep - Year 6) through a focus on lesson planning and delivery
I hope you all have a great week and look forward to seeing you in the school as partners in your child’s learning.
Lee Braney

QPARENTS

Parents that are not active on QParents have been emailed an invitation keycode letter from the school to register for an account through the QParents App (app needs to be downloaded to your phone/tablet). Letters with the invitational keycode have been sent home with those students without a current email address. QParents is a secure web and mobile application that allows parents and caregivers of Queensland state school students to access information about their child and to communicate directly with their school. QParents provides you with secure, online access to information such as:
• Attendance Details
• Access Report Cards and Assessments
• Invoice and Payment Details
• Consent Form
• Online Payments
• Update your child’s details including home address, medical conditions, submit reasons for unexplained absences, notify the school of future absences, make online payments against school invoices.

Naidoc Celebrations
NAIDOC celebrations were enjoyed by students, staff and community members. There were many exciting activities that the students were able to explore and engage in. Face painting, rock painting, traditional games, bracelet making and beading were just a few of the activities. The day ran smoothly with special thanks to Miss Samara and Mrs Leedie. To finish the event a Kup Murri was shared by all. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and guests who helped make this day memorable for our students.
Challenge Games
Last week some of our students had the opportunity to participate in the Challenge Games. The Challenge Games is a two-day event of sporting activities, athletics, fun and games for school children who have a disability -regardless of their type of disability – hearing or visually impaired, intellectually impaired, physically impaired (cerebral palsy, spinal injury, amputee, wheelchair dependent, short stature), autism, attention deficit, learning difficulty – or any other. The students were accompanied by Mrs Cooms, Mrs Kylie, Mrs Karen and Mrs Smith. A lot of fun was had by all who attended.
Athletics Carnival
The annual interhouse athletics carnival was held last week where the whole school participated in a variety of events. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and events ran smoothly. Thanks to all the amazing staff for your contributions and a special mention to Mr Bail and Mrs Leedie.
Garbutt Magpies
Last week some of the Elders from the Garbutt Magpies came and spoke to the students who will be playing in the Magpie cup next week. Their message was all about resilience, respect, participation and most importantly FUN. Mrs Leedie and Miss Samara can't wait to take this group to compete against schools from all over Townsville.
Yesterday selected students participated in the Garbutt Magpie Cup. It was great to see the sportsmanship amongst the teams. Thanks to Mrs Leedie and Miss Samara for a fantastic event.
Prep B
Prep B children have been focusing on rhyme during our first few weeks of term 1. Here are some examples of the amazing work students have created as they learn about words that rhyme.
Prep B have also enjoyed manipulating play dough to create different faces as we focus on identifying feelings.
