Principal Pen
Wadda Mooli, Habari, Bonjour. Welcome back for Term 3 of 2024.
Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a wonderful break with friends and family, and that you were able to enjoy our amazing winter weather. I enjoyed talking with students last week about their holidays, some people sure had some great adventures. It is wonderful to see students returning to school, happy and ready to learn.
HOMEWORK CLUB
This term we start Homework Club on a Tuesday afternoon from 2:30-3:30pm in the school hall during weeks 2-9. During Homework club, students will be provided light afternoon tea and have the opportunity to complete school assigned homework/ reading. Students are required to bring their homework, home readers and Home Reading Log each time attend. Students need to fill in the permission form and return it to the School Office. Students may only attend once the permission slip has been returned. Thank you to all our staff who are volunteering their time to help.
NAIDOC WEEK
This Friday we recognise and celebrated NAIDOC Week with a whole school assembly, cultural activities and a Kup Murri. This year, NAIDOC week is commemorated through the theme ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’. This theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture, with a fire symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
LATE ARRIVALS
Students arriving after 8:45am must report to the office to receive a late slip. Prior to 8.45am students are asked to go directly to their class to begin learning.
ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT
Each year, all schools in Queensland publish a report on their school's progress and achievements for the previous year. The report is a version of our review and reflection which is completed at the end of each academic year (which is the same for all schools).
School annual reports are a key governance and communication mechanism for schools and their communities to help express and celebrate the focus, activities and outcomes of schooling each year. Our 2023 school annual report is available to view on our school website.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
Each year, families are asked to participate in the School Opinion Survey. Families with one or more enrolled student will receive one invitation to complete the survey. OneSchool (the departmental database) generates invitations. Invitations are sent over a number of days in the week beginning Monday 15 July. The survey closes on 16 August. We appreciate your feedback and encourage as many families as possible to participate. More information will be provided in coming weeks. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to provide us with this invaluable feedback.
HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING
We are committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, students and everyone involved with our school community and workplace. Creating a safe learning and working environment is of utmost importance to us at Aitkenvale State School. We thank our supportive and diverse community members for working with us to ensure communications and conduct is safe.
The department does not condone aggression in any form. All forms of aggression directed towards staff is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
ATTENDANCE
School attendance is compulsory under the Education Act, however if children are unwell, we know it is best for them and the school community for them to stay home. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, parents are requested to inform the school. If your child is absent from school on any given day and we are unaware of the reason for the absence, an SMS message will be generated asking you to contact the school regarding your child’s absence. Students are encouraged to be At School, On Time, Every Day, unless they are unwell.
Our school has two focus areas for 2024, which drive the work happening at Aitkenvale SS. The following are our priorities as outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan 2024.
School Priority 1
Maximise student engagement and wellbeing across all settings through a reduction in reported behaviour incidences
School Priority 2
Improve Level of Achievement in English for all students (Prep - Year 6) through a focus on lesson planning and delivery
I hope you all have a great week and look forward to seeing you in the school as partners in your child’s learning.

Award Recipients - Week 1
100 Days of Prep
Last Friday, Prep marked a significant milestone at Aitkenvale State School with a special celebration of 100 days of school. This achievement was especially meaningful for the youngest members of our school community. The students engaged in fun activities during the morning festivities.
New Prep Playground
During the holiday break, the Prep playground was completed. The children are delighted with their new playground and have had a great time exploring their new play equipment.
Homework Program
The Community Hub Homework Club started this week. During Homework Club, students have the opportunity to complete school assigned homework and reading with some of our classroom teachers and teacher aides.
Look at our little achievers! They are practicing and improving their knowledge and skills.
Aboriginal Artefacts
Mrs Leedie brought in some of her family's Aboriginal artefacts to show. She had boomerangs, didgeridoos, paintings, artwork and clapsticks. She also had some Biri language cards (from the Whitsundays area). The students all loved learning about how these items are used and how special they are to Mrs Leedie and her family. The students especially loved learning some language words, we can't wait to use them more. Everyone is looking forward to our whole school NAIDOC celebration on Friday.
ATSIAP
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aspirations Program (ATSIAP) is a state-wide academic challenge for eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The program builds upon students' creativity and critical thinking skills. ATSIAP aims to raise students' expectations of themselves as learners.
Mrs Leedie and Miss Samara were extremely proud of all the students for their effort. Although we didn't place in any of the events, they represented our school with pride and displayed great sportsmanship.
