Principal Pen
Wadda Mooli, Jambo, Habari, Balao, Bonjour.
Welcome to Week 10 and the last newsletter for Term 2.
10 weeks ago, I joined Aitkenvale State School and, in my time, here I have been a part of many events and I have been able to meet lots of our fabulous community members. I have really enjoyed my first term as Principal and am looking forward to what Term 3 brings. I am excited by the work happening at the school and feel like the school is in good hands with amazing staff members who are all working extremely hard for our children.
YEAR 5 & 6
Our Year 5 & 6 students head off to camp at Paluma for the next few days. This is a great experience for our students and a huge commitment from our staff who attend. We wish our students a safe and exciting time at camp.
GOLD and SILVER REWARDS
Congratulations to all students who attended the Gold and Silver rewards days. There was a lot of fun had by this group of students who have put in a big effort across Term 2. We are proud of their behaviour, and we loved sharing these fun times with them. Well-deserved kids. Hopefully we can see some more students there in Term 3.
EARLY YEARS
The early years of a child’s life from when they are first born until they are 5-8 years old, are very important years. Here at Aitkenvale SS, we offer a range of quality experiences for our children to foster their learning. One of our main offerings is to hold a Playgroup. We know that playgroups help parents and children learn together to build on the “curiosity” of the young mind.
Another annual activity is to celebrate Under 8s. This year we will be holding our celebration next term. If you have a child in Prep to Year 2, come along and join in the fun. Many activities are provided for the students to participate in by independently walking around and deciding what they might like to do. It is one of my favourite days! We are also ready to launch our Prep 2025 Transition experiences and enrolments. If you have a child ready for Prep next year, please ensure you get your application forms in now.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
School photos will occur in week 2 of Term 3, Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th July. Please note opt out forms were sent home last week. You only need to return this consent if you do not want your child to participate in the photos.
CHANGE OF DETAILS If you have changed any of your details, please ensure the school office is notified. This includes residential, postal and email addresses, Emergency Contacts etc. It is essential we have the correct email address in order for Semester 1 report cards to be emailed home.
ATTENDANCE & SICKNESS
With the cooler weather, there is quite a bit of sickness in the school. We encourage you to work with your child to maintain good hygiene, and to stay at home when unwell. School attendance is compulsory under the Education Act, however if children are unwell, we know it is best for them and the school community for them to stay home. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, parents are requested to inform the school. If your child is absent from school on any given day and we are unaware of the reason for the absence, an SMS message will be generated asking you to contact the school regarding your child’s absence. Students are encouraged to be At School, On Time, Every Day, unless they are unwell.
As of Day, 1 Term 3 we will not be giving students late tickets until 8.45am. We would like children to attend class straight away if they arrive prior to 8.45am. After this time, they will be required to pick up a late slip. We have noticed there are a large number of students lining up each morning and it takes quite some time for them to get to class. We believe this strategy will help our students to settle quicker in the mornings.
UNIFORM
Aitkenvale has an amazing new uniform, which is being transitioned in across the year. The Aitkenvale uniform consists of the new polo shirt, black shorts/skorts/skirt, Aitkenvale Bucket hat, shoes and socks. In winter months we ask that jumpers are plain black. Please ensure we are all respecting our school by wearing the uniform with pride. The broader community see us wearing the uniform and make assumptions of our school based on things such as the appearance and behaviour of students. Be proud to be part of the Aitkenvale community and wear the uniform with pride.
Our school has two focus areas for 2024, which drive the work happening at Aitkenvale SS. The following are our priorities as outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan 2024.
School Priority 1
Maximise student engagement and wellbeing across all settings through a reduction in reported behaviour incidences
School Priority 2
Improve Level of Achievement in English for all students (Prep - Year 6) through a focus on lesson planning and delivery
I hope you all have a great holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in the school, next term, as partners in your child’s learning.
Lee Braney
Principal (Acting)

Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Parents that are not active on QParents have been emailed an invitation keycode letter from the school to register for an account through the QParents App (app needs to be downloaded to your phone/tablet). Letters with the invitational keycode have been sent home with those students without a current email address. QParents is a secure web and mobile application that allows parents and caregivers of Queensland state school students to access information about their child and to communicate directly with their school. QParents provides you with secure, online access to information such as:
• Attendance Details
• Access Report Cards and Assessments
• Invoice and Payment Details
• Consent Form

Silver Day Activities
Gold Day Celebrations
On Monday as part of PBL rewards selected students got to participate in the Gold Day celebrations. Everyone had a lot of fun dancing at the disco and enjoying the pizza. Well done!
Year 5/6 Paluma Camp
The year 5/6 students attended camp at the Paluma Environmental Education Centre this week. They have had a lot of fun exploring the nature trails and engaging in group challenges. The students have been able to foster their friendship and develop their understanding of the natural world.
The shelters were set, planned and built entirely by students. They had to work through ideas that they came up with before they were then “cyclone tested” by Dan from PEEC …
PBL
The PBL focus for week's 9 and 10 is centred around the behaviour expectation 'Being Responsible: We own the consequences of our choices'.As we approach the final two weeks of the term, the PBL team discussed the importance of acknowledging students who continuously follow school and classroom expectations, making positive/good behaviour choices that lead to positive learning outcomes. Students understand the difference between positive and negative consequences when demonstrating the behaviour expectations at Aitkenvale.
