Wadda Mooli, Habari, Bonjour. Welcome to Week 8. This is always a busy time of the term! With just over 2 weeks remaining, the students are busily completing summative assessment for many of their learning areas, and teachers are preparing Semester 1 Report Cards.
WOW! What an event the Centenary Celebrations turned out to be. On Friday we welcomed close to 200 guests to the Hall for our special assembly. I was extremely proud to stand in front of all the past and present staff, students and community. As I said on the day, the number of people that attended shows how much Aitkenvale means to so many people.
Saturday was amazing! The community came out in large numbers. I didn’t have a clicker but I would think the numbers would have been in the thousands. Such a great sight seeing people actively engaged with Aitkenvale SS. I would like to thank Pimlico SHS, CK, The Army, Police, Renegade Markets, Pop Up Food Trucks, Kinetic, The Drum Collective, Multi-Cultural Australia and Chery Motors for being a big part of our day and helping us celebrate Aitkenvale’s 100 years. A huge thank you to the committee for all their amazing work. The Event would not have occurred without all of your hard work and dedication. From the current staff and students to the past staff and students, we are proud to continue on the legacy you have all left behind.
I am currently at the North Queensland Regional Leader Collaboration Day, and the Central Office Roadshow. These learning days are an opportunity for school leaders to come together to hear consistent state-wide messages, and to share practice across our schools. Aitkenvale was chosen to discuss the work we have done in Multi-Tiered-Systems of Support, Ms Garland did an amazing job of capturing our journey so far. It was a great opportunity to showcase all the work being done at Aitkenvale.
On Monday our dedicated teaching staff met with the Weir SS and Rasmussen SS to engage in professional learning. During the 2 hour twilight session teachers moderated work samples from across the school, while working in year level groups. There was lots of professional conversations had and important relationships formed.
HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING
We are committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, students and everyone involved with our school community and workplace. Creating a safe learning and working environment is of utmost importance to us at Aitkenvale State School. We thank our supportive and diverse community members for working with us to ensure communications and conduct is safe.
The department does not condone aggression in any form. All forms of aggression directed towards staff is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
ATTENDANCE & SICKNESS
With the cooler weather, there is quite a bit of sickness in the school. We encourage you to work with your child to maintain good hygiene, and to stay at home when unwell. School attendance is compulsory under the Education Act, however if children are unwell, we know it is best for them and the school community for them to stay home. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, parents are requested to inform the school. If your child is absent from school on any given
day and we are unaware of the reason for the absence, an SMS message will be generated asking you to contact the school regarding your child’s absence. Students are encouraged to be At School, On Time, Every Day, unless they are unwell.
Our school has two focus areas for 2024, which drive the work happening at Aitkenvale SS. The following are our priorities as outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan 2024.
School Priority 1
Maximise student engagement and wellbeing across all settings through a reduction in reported behaviour incidences
School Priority 2
Improve Level of Achievement in English for all students (Prep - Year 6) through a focus on lesson planning and delivery
Uniform
Aitkenvale has an amazing new uniform, which is being transitioned in across the year. The Aitkenvale uniform consists of the new polo shirt, ASPS shorts/skorts/skirt, Aitkenvale Bucket hat, shoes and socks. In winter months we ask that jumpers are plain black. Please ensure we are all respecting our school by wearing the uniform with pride. The broader community see us wearing the uniform and make assumptions of our school based on things such as the appearance and behaviour of students. Be proud to be part of the Aitkenvale community and wear the uniform with pride.
Interschool sport season one continues each Friday for year 5 and 6 students. Students playing netball travel by bus to Murray Sporting Complex and begin playing from approximately 12.15pm and they return to school by 2.30pm. All students participating in Rugby League walk across to Centrals ASA fields and play from approximately 12.15pm and return to school by 2pm. Parents are more than welcome to attend either of the sports. If you intend on going please check with the office for up to date times.
Year 5 and 6 camp notes and money are due. Please ensure this is done in a timely manner so final preparations can occur. We look forward to taking the students on camp in week 10. If you have any questions please contact your class teacher or the office for more information.
I hope you all have a great week and look forward to seeing you in the school as partners in your child’s learning.
